My first choice is:

  • NO harmful ingredients
  • NO Soap or detergents

Mpower is best used fresh on each job due to its colloidal action .

I mix up my solution on the job with hand hot water and for general cleaning Mix it at 120/1.

After vacuuming the carpet or upholstery I then liberally spray the item with Mpower ,I then proceed with agitation this is to give a even coat to all the fibres of the active solution on carpets I use mechanical agitation with either a oreck or crb machine .

I have found that a 20 to 25 min dwell works best on most jobs , once the dwell is completed I then Extract Using Just Plain water ,which then leaves no sticky  residue that other detergent based solutions can .

Cleaning Traffic Lanes

Traffic lanes are areas of carpet that become heavily soiled and worn , due to the heavy traffic over just one certain area .

The soil becomes embedded and the grit sand and soil removes a protective layer that surrounds the fibre , this stops the light from reflecting and leaves the area of carpet looking dull and worn .

To clean areas like this we  use different stages , after testing the fibres to identify what fibre it is follow these stages .

  • Plug your machine in and switch your heater on
  1.  Give the carpet a good brush with a carpet brush or stiff broom, rotary, crb (Contra rotating brushes)
  2. Vacuum the area thoroughly , going north, south, west and east
  3. Apply your chosen carpet cleaning solution (hot)
  4. Allow the solution to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes ( Do not agitate yet)
  5. Agitate with your chosen method , now leave this again to dwell 5 to 10 mins
  6. pre spray the area again , checking all the time that you are not our wetting the area .
  7. Allow the solution to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes then agitate once more

The reason to do this is to change the state of the soils and grease that lay on the carpet , they are solids, and we are attempting to change this into a soluble solution that can be easily extracted .

Rapid resoiling

These stairs have been cleaned by the home owner with shop purchased carpet cleaning detergent.

rapid re-soiling due to detergent residue being left in the carpet

rapid re-soiling due to detergent residue being left in the carpet

This seems to work at first but within hours the carpet fibers become sticky, attracting dirt to the fibers .

this is due to not flushing out the detergent with a fresh water rinse with some added white vinegar ,this will help rinse out detergent residue , you wouldn’t wash your hair then not rinse it.

The same is true with your laundry that is why your rinse cycle takes so long .

Professional carpet cleaners use non detergent based cleaners,  if a detergent based one is needed then it is rinsed out of your carpet using a high powered hot water extraction machine .

How to clean your own carpets

Cleaning a carpet : we must follow 4 principles

1. Chemical.
Your chemical must be a dedicated carpet cleaning solution , and choose the correct one for the fiber construction of your carpet, wool carpets should no more than 5.5 ph , use up to 10.5 on heavily soiled polypropylene carpets

2. Agitation.
Helps distribute cleaning agents for maximum soil suspension and removal.
To use a cleaning solution without any agitation would require an increase in cleaning solution temperature, a stronger cleaning chemical and or more time

3. Temperature.
To use a cold cleaning solution would require an increase in agitation, chemical action and or time.

4. Time
To minimize time to perform a cleaning task would require an increase in cleaning solution temperature, more agitation, and or a stronger cleaning product

When using this method , there is some points to follow.
Do not over wet , do not keep going over the same spot , as all you will do is soak the carpet and cause wick back.(Where a under lying stain returns through wicking)
Also put the correct dilution amounts of chemical into your spray , or severe re-soiling will happen

Items needed

• yard brush
• Carpet solution
• A sprayer for your solution
• White vinegar (optional)
• A Carpet cleaning machine ie; Vax, Rug doctor, Bissell

The vinegar acts as a deodoriser and helps to extract all the detergent residue, and organic soiling.
It also softens the fibres whilst neutralizing and rinsing all detergent out of the carpet.

Leaving it cleaner and smelling fresher longer.

Steps to follow

1. vacuum your carpet well , do it north to south then west to east slowly , as up to 80% of dirt is dry organic soil

2. Spray your chosen Carpet cleaning chemical onto carpet at recommended dilution rate. it should be enough just to dampen the carpet fibres.

use one of these to lightly spray the area to be cleaned

use one of these to lightly spray the area to be cleaned

Do not be tempted to put more than the recommended amount as this can cause rapid resoling issues.

3. Agitate chemical well into the carpet with a stiff clean yard brush. give it a good scrub , but not to much as it could cause fibre damage to wool carpets

lightly agite the solution int o the area to be cleaned

lightly agite the solution int o the area to be cleaned

4. Leave for 15 to 25 minutes depending on soiling , don’t let it dry out though

5. put plain hot water(not boiling) in your machine. Add a dash of white vinegar about 10ml per litre .DO NOT put any cleaning chemical in your machine just vinegar and hot water, the vinegar smell will disappear in 10 to 15 minutes

6. Extract using machine

7. Open windows and turn heating on if a wet or cold day.
Carpets should be dry in 2 to 4 hours .
You can help the drying process further by toweling the carpet , this works very well on stair carpeting as it stops wick back caused by very heavy soiling on the bottom 3 steps.
Nb we use Non detergent based products

How I became a Carpet Cleaner

Hi I first started carpet cleaning around 2002 after looking into doing window cleaning , but luckily i met a man called Martin Riley he had just transferred from reach and wash window cleaning and convinced me that carpet cleaning was the way to go as it was indoor work (good point).

And i’m glad i took Martins advice because carpet cleaning is a passion of me , and I think that is the root of all success you have to have passion for the job you do .

My first years carpet cleaning were in Cornwall which would see me travelling from port Isaac  to st Ives on the same day after 10 years of that I moved back to Royston and set up a working partnership with my best friend Colin Phillips.

We then set up Barnsley Carpet and upholstery cleaners , why Barnsley ? not Sheffield , Wakefield , Leeds Doncaster all bigger population , well its because we love barnsley people, anyone who has met me and Colin we know we like a laugh and we’ve found that so do Barnsley folk , so why travel .

Together we have developed our own system of carpet cleaning that cleans better than ever using new  solution technology developed by a company based in Cornwall, using their solutions and our application system we can have carpets clean fresh and dry in under a hour
