Pet Urine stains and odours

You’ve just had your new carpets fitted, and they are looking great, off you go to make a cup of tea, only to return to find that your beloved pet has relieved himself on your brand new carpet!!

IMG_0934To avoid this happening again

You need to find all the areas that this has happened, and clean those areas really well.

This is the process you will need to follow:

Use your eyes and nose to find out where they have soiled

You could purchase a Uv light, these are available from Amazon, to use them switch out the lights and go round the room with the Uv light switched on, you should be able to see the soiled areas light up, mark these areas with pieces

of paper.

Most stains if left to dry are permanent  , for any chance of removal use a enzyme spray, apply leave to work for 10 minutes then extract

Image

. Then proceed with cleaning the soiled areas.

  • For fresh soiling you need to flush the area very well to remove all soiling.
  • If you have a wet vac use this , if it hasn’t got a water spray attachment ,then get a tub of cold plain water and flood the area using a sponge then extract it using the vac ,remember if it is a inch mark on top, it could of spread over 1 metre into the backing .
  • Keep rinsing until the area is completely free from soiling
  • Apply Urine neutraliser
  • Once the area is clean apply the neutraliser over the area, making sure it is applied well.
  •  Be sure to test first on a hidden piece of carpet first, for any colour loss
  • Avoid using hot water cleaners to clean urine odours from carpet or upholstery. The heat will permanently set the stain by bonding the protein into any man-made fibres.
  • Avoid using cleaning chemicals, especially those with strong odors such as ammonia or vinegar. From your pet’s perspective, these don’t effectively eliminate or cover the urine odor and may actually encourage your pet to reinforce the urine scent mark in that area.

  • Neutralizing cleaners won’t work until you’ve rinsed every trace of the old cleaner from the carpet, if you’ve previously used cleaners or chemicals of any kind on the area. Even if you haven’t used chemicals recently, any trace of a non-protein-based substance will weaken the effect of the enzymatic cleaner. The cleaner will use up its “energy” on the old cleaners, instead of on the protein stains you want removed.
  • Your job will be more difficult if urine has soaked down into the padding underneath your carpet. In some cases, you may need to take the drastic step of removing and replacing that portion of the underlay

  • concrete  floors ,you will need to clean it sanitise it then seal it
  • Wood and chipboard rip up and replace this best way to rid you 100% of odours.

As a generally all round deodorizer and sanitiser i have found prochems odour fresh to be exceptionaly good.odour fresh from prochem

Aside

The sofa above was covered in blood and is constructed with natural fibres I tried all the chemicals I had on the van and I still couldn’t remove the stains . I then created my own mixture using warm water and ariel actilift, once I had … Continue reading

How to clean your own carpets

Cleaning a carpet : we must follow 4 principles

1. Chemical.
Your chemical must be a dedicated carpet cleaning solution , and choose the correct one for the fiber construction of your carpet, wool carpets should no more than 5.5 ph , use up to 10.5 on heavily soiled polypropylene carpets

2. Agitation.
Helps distribute cleaning agents for maximum soil suspension and removal.
To use a cleaning solution without any agitation would require an increase in cleaning solution temperature, a stronger cleaning chemical and or more time

3. Temperature.
To use a cold cleaning solution would require an increase in agitation, chemical action and or time.

4. Time
To minimize time to perform a cleaning task would require an increase in cleaning solution temperature, more agitation, and or a stronger cleaning product

When using this method , there is some points to follow.
Do not over wet , do not keep going over the same spot , as all you will do is soak the carpet and cause wick back.(Where a under lying stain returns through wicking)
Also put the correct dilution amounts of chemical into your spray , or severe re-soiling will happen

Items needed

• yard brush
• Carpet solution
• A sprayer for your solution
• White vinegar (optional)
• A Carpet cleaning machine ie; Vax, Rug doctor, Bissell

The vinegar acts as a deodoriser and helps to extract all the detergent residue, and organic soiling.
It also softens the fibres whilst neutralizing and rinsing all detergent out of the carpet.

Leaving it cleaner and smelling fresher longer.

Steps to follow

1. vacuum your carpet well , do it north to south then west to east slowly , as up to 80% of dirt is dry organic soil

2. Spray your chosen Carpet cleaning chemical onto carpet at recommended dilution rate. it should be enough just to dampen the carpet fibres.

use one of these to lightly spray the area to be cleaned

use one of these to lightly spray the area to be cleaned

Do not be tempted to put more than the recommended amount as this can cause rapid resoling issues.

3. Agitate chemical well into the carpet with a stiff clean yard brush. give it a good scrub , but not to much as it could cause fibre damage to wool carpets

lightly agite the solution int o the area to be cleaned

lightly agite the solution int o the area to be cleaned

4. Leave for 15 to 25 minutes depending on soiling , don’t let it dry out though

5. put plain hot water(not boiling) in your machine. Add a dash of white vinegar about 10ml per litre .DO NOT put any cleaning chemical in your machine just vinegar and hot water, the vinegar smell will disappear in 10 to 15 minutes

6. Extract using machine

7. Open windows and turn heating on if a wet or cold day.
Carpets should be dry in 2 to 4 hours .
You can help the drying process further by toweling the carpet , this works very well on stair carpeting as it stops wick back caused by very heavy soiling on the bottom 3 steps.
Nb we use Non detergent based products

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

Image

When we ventured into the commercial world of carpet cleaning , we were very  pleased to get the contract for Barnsley Academy  as it tested our Dry Clean System to the Max, and it came out with flying colours .

It Meant that large areas of the college were not out of action for long periods whilst it dried, The carpets were dry  Cleaned, Deodorised, Stain Blocked And Dry In well under a hour.

How do we do it

No 1  we vacuum the area very slowly and thoroughly, this removes upto 60 to 70% of the dry soiling in the carpet, we have found that even when cleaners are contracted to do this their vacuum cleaners are not upto the job as they dont empty the machines/Bags so they lose suction , the brushes are worn and the filters are blocked up filters.

No 2 We choose a suitable pre-conditioning solution that is suitable for the carpet construction and the needs of the customer, on most jobs we use a specialist  encapsulation product which cleans Deodorise’s,  and stain blocks in one process.

This is sprayed onto the carpet and left to dwell for 15 to 20 mins then agited    with a heavy duty industrial rotary machine this loosens and removes any greasy marks and caked on deposits.

No 3 we attached thick cotton bonnets to the rotary machine and it is moved across the sprayed area ,this absorbs all the organic soling and oily residue, whilst also drying the carpet at the same time this process avoids wick back , dampness, mould and saturated carpets

Vacuum and clean your carpet for a Healthy home

Asthma  is on the increase and Lots of things can trigger symptoms, including allergens such as pollen or pet dander; mold;  dust mite droppings cockroach droppings; dust.

The house dust mite is a cosmopolitan guest in human habitation. Dust mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin and flourish in the stable environment of dwellings.

A regular program of vacuuming can significantly improve the indoor air quality, this followed by regular cleaning of carpets and soft furnishing will greatly contribute to a healthy home.
Carpets have been shown to act as a filter and reduce air borne dust, as hard flooring has become popular there been a rise in allergic reactions.

Have you ever woken up in the morning with a blocked up nose and a headache, It is more than likley caused by a allergic reaction to houshold dust mites.

The House Dust Mite are microscopic (up to 0.3 mm) arthropod creatures related to ticks and spiders. Too small to be seen with the naked eye the mites are turtle shaped creatures with eight legs. They live on the decaying dead skin flakes in house dust – skin that we shed every day. There is hardly a house in the UK without them, although the number can vary between houses containing huge numbers, and others almost none.

The Mites survival does not only depend on the amount of dust, but very much on the amount of humidity in the house.

Dust Mites live for 3-4 months with females laying 25 to 50 eggs, with a new generation produced every three weeks!

It is not the Mite that we become allergic to, but ironically it’s the waste product from our skin that they digest. In fact it is the powerful protein enzymes the mites digest our skin with, in a similar way to most creatures.

Each mite will produce around 20 droppings per day everywhere they go. Each of these droppings holds around 10-12 sub pellets that are about 2-10 micron in size and contain their leftover enzymes.

Cleaning mattress’s and all your bedding ,replacing your old pillows will give a great nights sleep with no blocked up feeling

The best way to deep clean a heavily soiled carpet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwJHEirCEjs&feature=g-upl

This is by far the best way to clean heavily soiled carpets.
The carpet is vacuumed very thourghly ,that is north ,south east west, to remove all loose soil particles which an account for up to 70% of the dirt.
Stage 2 and this is very important , you must choose a pre condtioning spray that suits the soiling conditions.
In this case we used a Shockwave formulation which is great for the treatment of heavy grease and organic soiling, and does not contain harsh solvents or caustics. this is then sprayed onto the carpet and left to dwell for 20 to 30 minutes this allows the solution time to break down all the organic soiling and grease .
After the dwell time the solution is agited into the carpet with a rotary machine with a carpet brush attached, which aides the removal of all dirt and grease from the fibres this also aides the encapsulation process.
Once this stage is complete a hwe Machine is used to flush out all the solution containing the dirt , carpets rinsed this way are generally dry in about 7 to 8 hours . alliteratively the final process can be done by bonnet mopping which i will explain in my next blog
